Across the Universe
A couple friends of mine from Seattle have been staying with me for about a week. Its been an incredible time to catch up and reconnect. Seems somehow even the closest of friends can lose touch with what's going on in each other's lives by moving clear across the country.
Anyhoo, last night we watched Across the Universe, the musical drama centered around the Beatles' songs. Let me tell you, I am by no means any radical fan of the Beatles, I mean certainly I know many of their songs, have seen one of the movies and know a decent bit about them (mostly thanks to my husband <---borderline radical fan). I do appreciate their music and especially how it spoke to and about the time period they were most popular during. Events in the movie are derived from actual events in the 60's- the draft, the riot at Columbia University and so on. It was such a well crafted film, nothing was unintentional, from lines the characters spoke directly pulling from lyrics; references made by street signs, and names of cafes; and even scenes that the characters physically performed suggest some element of Beatles' history and impact on today's culture. Even characters are named after various song titles- Rita, Jude, Lucy, Mr. Kite, Prudence-who came in through the bathroom window...seriously folks! This is a movie that deserves to be appreciated, even if some of the scenes let me see what it would probably be like to do a whole stinkin' lot of drugs. The story is acceptable and cohesive, but more than anything a way to cram as many Beatles songs into 2 hours and 5 minutes as possible without simply playing them one after another. The greatest part in my opinion is the arrangement of the songs- they're devastatingly beautiful and totally put into perspective the fact that their songs are still relevant and sensational today. I need this soundtrack. Its ridiculous- I could go on and on, but I'll leave it here and hope I've encouraged some curiosity and desire to see it for yourself!
